| Old House dates back to 1870, and has undergone a very sensitive restoration, that makes the most of the weathered old stone fabric of the building, its simple village architecture, and its setting. The entire ground floor of the main house is open-plan, with stone floors and a beamed wooden ceiling and wooden supports that divide it into separate areas for dining and relaxing. The sitting area has a distinctly Ottoman feel about it, with cushioned benches and a huge low table, while the kitchen is utterly delightful, the kind of ‘country kitchen’ that makes such a wonderful magazine photo. Outdoor meals are likely to go on for hours, taking place at a long table under the spreading shade of an old mulberry tree, and overlooking deeply satisfying views across the countryside. The swimming pool, too, has a very pretty setting, between the main house and the guest cottage. Mature trees and plants, beautiful old stone paths and walls complement perfectly this dignified house. The calm atmosphere, almost monastic, is so relaxing that it may well take you a few days to decide on moving away from it to explore. |
