| Stone and wood and pale colours have been blended by a local architect into a house that has become part of its natural setting rather than dominating it, and that echoes the simple symmetry of the nearby chapel. At Evreti steep pine-clad hills drop down to a shore fringed with small coves and pebble beaches, and the mountainous mass of the island of Ithaka looms, like a mirage, just across the sea. Odysseus took ten years to return to Ithaka, but from Evreti the lure of Ithaka can be answered in just a single day by boat. The Architect’s House is constructed of stone, with a high vaulted ceiling and open-plan living area, that allows light and air to circulate freely. Bleached wood furniture and fittings and a pale colour scheme underline the effect of tranquility that the house exudes. Downstairs, French windows open on to stone terraces that in turn lead to the private pool just below; upstairs a twin bedroom opens on to a balcony overlooking the densely tree-clad hillsides. The house is located four hundred metres down an unmade track, whilst there is no sea view a mere three minute walk will take you down a shady, gently sloping path, bringing you to a small cove with a beach and a view of Ithaka that takes the breath away. Here at Evreti, natural beauty predominates, but when the urge to rejoin the human race kicks in, for some good food and wine accompanied by that endlessly fascinating pastime of people-watching, then Fiskardo is not far away at all. |
