| A house like Kokkokila is not created overnight. It does not spring, ready to occupy, from a drawing board. It evolves. Favourite pieces are brought from home – in this case, Scotland – and gathered up on travels; friends leave books and sketches; rugs and cushions are replaced, potted plants grow and flourish. Kokkokila, a house of sun-warmed stones and blue shutters that has all the charm of a typical Mediterranean farmhouse, still retains the unmistakable Corfiot character of the original humble shepherd’s cottage, dating from 1740. However beautiful the interior of the villa may be – earning it several mentions in glossy house magazines – it is the combination of terraces and views that proves irresistible. The outside dining terrace is broad and shady, and there are numerous corners in shade or sun that are perfect for quiet moments with a book or a sketch pad. The sheer elegance of the swimming pool, elevated slightly on its own terrace above the house, is complemented by the fantastic view across the Corfu channel to the austere, silent mountains of Albania. An unspoilt Corfu still exists – and Kokkokila is proof of this. |
