The road up to Apolissies may be rather steep and winding but it is easily negotiated and soon becomes familiar – and the reward for determination is to be found in the marvellous views and peaceful atmosphere of Petrino. Steps take you up to the house, where cool breezes waft down from Corfu’s highest mountain, Pantocrator, and guests are treated to frequent sightings of the mountain’s resident eagles. With all the accommodation on one level, Petrino is a restful house full of character. A covered terrace runs the length of the house and makes a wonderful outdoor dining area. The very pretty swimming pool is also on the same level as the rest of the house. Just one kilometre from Nissaki, where there is a genuinely friendly welcome in all the shops and tavernas, Petrino is a good choice for a holiday spent exploring all the quiet pleasures of this unspoilt area. There are several lovely beaches, water sports, and some excellent walks.
