| Apolissies is a very small hilltop hamlet overlooking Nissaki, with glorious views over the hills and bays of Corfu and to the mainland. To one side are the steep slopes and outcrops of Corfu’s highest mountain, Pantocrator. The setting is ideal for anyone who enjoys walking, wildlife watching, or just taking it easy. Ioanna is slightly closer to the village than its sister villa, Petrino, which is a short walk away through the terraced olive grove, but Apolissies could hardly be said to buzzing with activity! The original charm of the old house has been sensitively retained and owes much to interesting mementoes of the owner’s family, including an original dowry chest. Thick stone walls keep it cool and a surprising amount of light floods in through the numerous windows. The kitchen is small and very typical of local houses, but it has all the essential modern equipment, and opens on to a beautiful stone terrace, partly roofed and equipped with a built-in barbecue, that makes a delightful outdoor dining area. This is what people visualise when they dream of owning ‘a place in the sun’ – relaxed outdoor living, with a private swimming pool close enough to please the laziest amongst us. The rest of the world seems quite far away, a feeling that is enhanced by what, to be fair, has to be described as a slightly challenging uphill drive to reach the village. After one or two, trips, however, you will soon get used to it, and it is, after all, only one kilometre back down to the nearest shop and taverna. |
