| Le Clos St Maurin is a beautiful 18th century converted convent, set in peaceful and mature gardens. The origins of the house however are from much earlier, the plot itself having been an important Templar site from at least the 13th century. This reputedly accounts for the two magnificent ‘Cedars of Lebanon’ in the gardens, which are said to be the oldest and tallest in Provence. The house has a large enclosed courtyard, a lovely lawned area and an enchanting orchard filled with a diverse range of trees. A traditional bassin and old fountain form an unusual and exquisite swimming pool and there is a distinct regal air to the grounds. Inside this impressive property the furniture is a delightful collection of French and English antiques, chosen with great care by the owner. The charming Provençal village of St Saturinin les Apt is just a fifteen minute walk away, and it has two excellent boulangeries, a good general store and several wonderful restaurants and bars, whilst the regional market town of Apt is a ten minute drive. The house is well positioned to explore the area which is known for its many famous wines, notably the legendary Châteauneuf du Pape. It is located in the Lubéron National park and a forty five minute drive from the Papal town of Avignon and one hour from historic Aix en Provence. Clos St Maurin features wonderful gardens with a fabulous orchard which contains all different types of trees. There is also a cherry harvest in early summer. |
