DESTINATION INFORMATION

Oman, still largely undiscovered by the travelling public, remains the great secret of Arabia. At one time a nation of maritime traders, thanks to its strategic situation between India and Europe, the country later endured 250 years of oppressive rule by the same family.

In 1970, however, the present ruler, Sultan Qaboos, set about the task of transforming his country from a primitive land to one of the most modern, yet retaining its finest traditions. Oman is a country of spectacular scenery, over a
thousand medieval forts remain as evidence of the thrilling past of a country considered to be part of ‘The Cradle of Humanity’.

A vast desert plain covers most of central Oman, with rugged mountains along the north and south-eastern shores, where the main cities are located. The 1600 kilometre coastline varies from long white beaches to the mountains of the Musandam Peninsula. The entire coast of Oman is noted for its diving opportunities, and a cruise aboard one of the traditional dhows is unforgettable. Travelling inland, places such as the Wadi Shab display an unbelievable contrast with the desert scenery; hidden in its depths are vivid pools, waterfalls and terraced plantations alive with kingfishers. Jeep safaris into the desert itself and visits to remarkable archaeological excavations, often connected with the centuries-old trade in frankincense, are opportunities to explore other aspects of this intriguing country. Amongst the ancient cities of Oman, Muscat, the capital, stands out, sprawled as it is between the mountains and the Arabian Gulf. Its stunning beauty owes much to dazzlingly white buildings that retain a strictly traditional appearance. It is in the cities that the ancient souks are to be found, subtly different to those of, say, North Africa, with cattle-sellers and storytellers competing for attention with bargains in gold, silver and turquoise jewellery.

The hotels of Oman are an experience in themselves, with bold and breathtaking modern architecture, and a wide range of services and amenities that are enough to keep the most demanding visitor occupied. A country of startling contrasts, of exceptional beauty and interest, Oman is so much more than just another holiday destination.
