Just a short drive from the centre of Marrakech, the great Palmeraie palm grove hides a secret, invisible behind fortress-like walls and massive gates – Dar Shama. Passing through the gates, lush green lawns spread out before you, scattered with inviting sun beds and hammocks. The low villa, more like a private house than a hotel, has been decorated in a traditional style incorporating many of the much-admired Moroccan skills, including that of zellige, the glittering glass mosaic that shimmers so irresistibly in the pure light. Right in the heart of the Medina, yet once you pass through the grand portal you enter a quiet haven of tranquility, where abundant greenery absorbs any stray suggestion of the noise and bustle you have left behind. The attractions of a riad hotel are obvious – converted from the original residences of wealthy town-dwellers; they are often quite grand, insulated from the bustle of the city by their high walls, with a cool, shady courtyard at their heart.
Les Jardins de la Medina, however, goes further – once a princely dwelling, it is larger than the usual riad and is endowed with a garden filled with mature trees, at the heart of which lies a large and beautiful swimming pool. Here and there between the privet-lined pathways are small havens of privacy, perfect to retreat to with a good book or for a snooze in a hammock under the shade of palms, olives, citrus and jacaranda trees.
