Marrakech

The imperial city of Marrakech is a marvel of sights and sounds. Encircled by the ochre ramparts and dominated by the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque, the city has a wealth of history and exquisite architecture to explore. In the colourful souks the products of every craft and skill practised in Morocco are available - you are expected to bargain! And finally, as tweilight descends upon the city, find yourself a good vantage point at one of the cafes in the Place Djemm el Fna and watch as the performers and acrobats appear on the square. As the cacophony of noise grows around you it is the most exhilerating event.

Dar Shama
Just a short drive from the centre of Marrakech, the great Palmeraie palm grove hides a secret, invisible behind fortress-like walls and massive gates – Dar Shama. Passing through the gates, lush green lawns spread out before you, scattered with inviting sun beds and hammocks. The low villa, more like a private house than a hotel, has been decorated in a traditional style incorporating many of the much-admired Moroccan skills, including that of zellige, the glittering glass mosaic that shimmers so irresistibly in the pure light. A terrace runs along the length of the building, shaded by a colonnade. The comfortable bedrooms continue the traditional theme, with the addition of modern touches such as air-conditioning. The largest suite has a rather splendid Jacuzzi bath, its own lounge, and a terrace on the ground floor. The hotel can be rented in its entirety, or as two separate buildings, each with its own swimming pool. The main building has ten rooms, one of which is a large suite with sitting rooms, garden and pool. Smaller groups would appreciate the convenience of the Kasbah, a separate building with four exquisitely furnished suites, private sitting room, garden and pool. If the two buildings are rented separately, separate entrances and the exclusive use of each garden and pool assure privacy. With a staff that is friendly but unobtrusive, impeccable service, meals served wherever you like, this is a very refined, truly restful ambience in which to enjoy a stay in Morocco.

Pricing: From £526 per person for 4 nights in a double room including flights, airport transfers and breakfast. Children under 6 years stay free sharing with 2 adults. A transfer service to Marrakech goes once in the morning and returns once in the afternoon and is included. Clients requiring the transfer at different times will be charged locally. Room, flight upgrades and different durations available.

Bedrooms open on to balconies or small courtyards, where birds come to drink at the fountains. A magnificent rooftop terrace is ringed by a skyline that is sheer magic as the sun goes down. Les Jardins de la Medina
The attractions of a riad hotel are obvious – converted from the original residences of wealthy town-dwellers; they are often quite grand, insulated from the bustle of the city by their high walls, with a cool, shady courtyard at their heart. Les Jardins de la Medina, however, goes further – once a princely dwelling, it is larger than the usual riad and is endowed with a garden filled with mature trees, at the heart of which lies a large and beautiful swimming pool. Here and there between the privet-lined pathways are small havens of privacy, perfect to retreat to with a good book or for a snooze in a hammock under the shade of palms, olives, citrus and jacaranda trees. Inside, the truly palatial building, with high ceilings, long windows draped in fringed white curtains and graceful colonnades, has been subtly updated. This is not a monument to antique style – it is chic and modern, a boutique hotel. The bedrooms are of three types: all are air-conditioned, ground floor rooms open on to the small private garden, some rooms on the upper floors have private balcony or terrace. There is a rooftop Moroccan tented salon and a second-floor terrace with sweeping views of the medina and the Atlas Mountains. Dinner is served in the courtyard beneath candle lanterns hung in the trees, and the cuisine mingles dishes of Moroccan, Bedouin, Mediterranean and Thai provenance. Facilities cover every possibility from include Internet access to fitness and massage rooms and beauty treatments. The hotel is situated in the Kasbah quarter of Marrakech, close to the Royal Palace and just a few minutes from the interminable activity of famed Jemma el Fnaa Square. Approached by a narrow road, it can be reached by car and has private parking, making it ideal for anyone hoping to venture outside the city during a holiday.

Pricing: From £528 per person for 5 nights in a double room including flights, return transfers and breakfast. Room and flight upgrades available.
