Caruso, Campania, Italy
The Hotel Caruso is distinguished by a colourful history that began in the 11th Century. Originally a palace, it suffered centuries of destruction, rebuilding, and neglect, but from the early twentieth century until recently it was a pension, very popular with social and cultural celebrities of the times, such as Garbo, Jackie Kennedy and Humphrey Bogart. A certain amount of scandal and decadence emanated from its guest list from time to time!
In 1999 the hotel was acquired by Orient-Express Hotels, and six years and twenty million pounds later, it re-opened in 2005 as a chic and very up-market hotel with just 54 guest rooms. The number of rooms may be limited, but the general ambience is one of space, peace and seclusion, thanks in part to its setting, 365 metres above sea level.
Echoes of the past remain in many architectural details, but the spacious bedrooms, decorated in uncluttered style, with subtle pastel colours, lack nothing in the way of modern amenities. Most of the rooms have sea views and private terrace, while some have a private garden.
A glorious infinity pool seems to merge with the endless blue of sky and sea, and enjoys unusually long hours of sunshine, due to its high position.
The surrounding olive and lemon groves lend a sharp, invigorating fragrance to the air.
Price Guide: Prices from £1281 per person, 5 nights including scheduled flights and breakfast.
