Gaios
Gaios is the capital of the small island of Paxos - hardly big enough to be called a town, but with a certain elegance and sophistication that no mere village can aspire to. Its British and Venetian past is reflected in the handsome neo-classic buildings of the waterfront, its Greek character evident in the colour-washed houses and the happy marriage of harbour life, cafe society, and people going about their daily business without allowing tourism to get in their way. There is never a dull moment in Gaios in summer - sit at a cafe table in its colourful quayside square and watch people to your heart's content!

Paxos Beach Hotel, Paxos, Greece
This family-run, beach bungalow hotel occupies an idyllic site. The accommodation is clustered about an enchanting small bay, where a pebble beach slopes down to a sea with colours as intense and varied as those of a peacock’s tail.
The simple chalet-style twin/double rooms, with en suite facilities and air-conditioning, each have a verandah or balcony, and are set amidst pine and olive trees.
The peace of the island is conducive to undisturbed enjoyment of the sunbathing facilities, to swimming in the tropically-tinted sea, or, if a burst of activity comes over you, to windsurfing or waterskiing. Small boats can be hired and moored at the beach, enabling the guest to explore the incredibly unspoilt Paxos coastline.
The atmosphere at the Paxos Beach Hotel is informal and relaxed and very friendly. Nothing much seems to have changed over the many years during which it has proved so popular with CV clients. There is a restaurant at the hotel, serving Greek and continental dishes, and a large open-air bar, but for variety, or some good shopping, the very pretty port of Gaios is just 15 minutes walk away.
Price Guide: From £467 per person, 7 nights including charter flights and breakfast.

Paxos Club, Paxos, Greece
At first glance the Paxos Club looks like a large and very well-appointed villa, rather than a hotel. Originally, it was indeed an imposing Paxiot country house, situated amidst seemingly endless olive groves; now it is a quiet and comfortable hotel, set in extensive and well-kept gardens, still surrounded by those olive groves.
The original house has become a restaurant, where breakfast, lunch and dinner can be taken, though it is hard to resist the pleasure of lunch outside by the large swimming pool. Greek and international cuisine is available. Accommodation is in individual air-conditioned apartments, each with the comfort and privacy of a private house.
There is a frequent courtesy bus to Gaios, though you can walk it in 15 to 20 minutes if you wish. The Paxos Club is perfect for those who like to hear the sounds of the countryside when on holiday, and enjoy walking in the olive groves, but the glittering white Paxos beaches are never far away, whether you use the hotel transfer or hire a car.
Price Guide: From £598 per person, 7 nights including charter flights and breakfast.
