| The Swiss-owned Dar Zitoune is just a few miles from Taroudannt, a fascinating fortified town of rose-red walls, souks and minarets interspersed with groves of orange and pomegranate trees. This is Berber country, and Dar Zitoune is a reflection of the traditional Berber style and decoration. Within its own walls lies a landscaped garden, its focus a truly magnificent swimming pool twenty metres long and shaped like a Moroccan gateway. Around this, fourteen air-conditioned bungalows are scattered through the grounds. The individual houses are decorated in the spice colours that are so typical of this country and have satellite TV, internet access and phone. The exceptionally friendly and hospitable staff, most of them local people, go out of their way to please. Some of the finest food to be found in the entire region is served here in the hotel restaurant, a subtle mix of Moroccan and European dishes, with vegetarian and dietary preferences fully catered for. |
