A fishing village in a former life, modern Cascais has a variety of restaurants, great beaches, bars and nightlife. In the hills behind, historic Sintra draws you to its intriguing Moorish castle and the enchanting Pena Palace. The delights of cosmopolitan Lisbon are within easy distance for a day's sightseeing. A Moorish castle, seafood restaurants and brightly painted fishing boats combine to form the character of Sesimbra. A jewel on the waterfront of the Costa Azul, it is backed by the beautiful 'green zone' of the Arrabida hills. South of the Sado estuary lies an area of outstanding beaches, including Praias do Carvalhal and Pego, which stretch for miles.

Sit within the Serra da Arrábida Natural Park, Portinho Beach is considered one of the prettiest in all of Portugal. Fine white sand and techincolour waters contract with the verdant hills of the natural park.

February - Lisbon Carnival

Good Friday - The statues of the Virgin Mary and Christ are taken in a procession through the town

Mid April - Lisbon Fish Festival - 5 day event celebrating diverse fish recipes and side dishes. There is food tasting, cooking demonstrations as well as entertainment at Pavilhão de Portugal (Nations Park)

April 25 - Liberation Day, National holiday

April 26-May 6 - International Independent Film Festival - "IndieLisboa" is the biggest film festival of Lisbon.

April-May - Festival of Nossa Senhora da Arrabida takes place in Cirio de Azeitao. The people from Azeitao have a great devotion for Our Lady of Arrabida to whom they pay homage first during the Espirito Santo (Holy Spirit) festival (April-May), and then again in July. The procession, which is by horse, is again one of the high points of this lively festival

May 1 - May Day (or Labour Day), National holiday - May Day is a day for celebrations and traditionally the festivities include dancing and music as well as heading into the countryside for a picnic lunch

June 10 - Portugal Day, National Holiday

June 13 - St Anthony's Day - A celebration in honor of Saint Anthony. The city's oldest quarters are decorated with paper lanterns, colored lights, and streamers, and the day ends with a parade down Avenida da Liberdade, when each neighborhood marches vying for prizes for the best costumes and songs

July - Arrabida Candle-Lit Procession takes place in Vila Nogueira de Azeitao

August 15 - Assumption of the Virgin, National holiday

Early September - Festival of Senhora da Saude (Our Lady of Health) takes place in Vila Fresca de Azeitao. Originally a religious festival, this 280 year-old event has also come to involve a secular component, since the 19th century. Today, the celebrations for Our Lady of Health still retain much of the authenticity of the festivals of days gone by - the Mass and the procession, but the bazaar, too, the bandstand for the groups of musicians and the horses

December 1 - Independence Day, National holiday
