The scent of Almond blossom fills the air and verdant orchards are scattered around the vicinity of Moncarapacho. A typical "Barrocal" village, the streets are home to examples of bourgeois architecture of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Heading east along the lagoon, you will find the spectacular village of Olhao, famed for its Cubic architecture and Moorish houses. Days can be spent in the beautiful sandy islets (accessed by local ferry services) which seperate the Rio Formosa Natural Park from the Atlantic, and are a choice location to sample the regions famous sea food restaurants.

Praia da Ilha da Armona (Blue Flag)

Accessible by ferry from Olhão in approx 15mins, Ilha da Armona island is part of the small islets separating the Ria Formosa estuary from the sea. Within the Natural Park, the island is on the extreme west of a long sandbank that runs for miles in an easterly direction to Tavira. Free of cars, this is a true paradise, but you will also find a number of facilities and amentities. Home to a small fishing community, here you will find restaurants serving excellent fish and shellfish.

Ilha de Tavira island is also part of the collection of sandy islets separating the Ria Formosa estuary from the Atlantic. Unique among the islets, this one contains trees. Largely considered one of the best of southern European beaches, this is a huge expanse of sand with calm water, accessed via the ferry service from Tavira.
