Le Meridien Penina

Resort Hotel

Le Meridian Penina is one of the best-known, well-established golfing hotels in Europe, with three golf courses, designed by the late Sir Henry Cotton, within the hotel estate itself: one of these is the superb Championship Course, and the other two are the nine-hole Academy Course and Resort Course. (Handicap certificates are required on the Championship Course – Men: 28, Ladies: 36). The Penina, however, is not famous for golf alone – it is, too, a wonderful hotel for families and sports enthusiasts in general. Sixty-three of its bedrooms are interconnecting and ideal for families – and most of the bedrooms in general have attractive terraces furnished with chairs.

There is an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a nearby beach (courtesy bus provided), and a most imaginative Children’s Club – the Penguin Village. Tennis, snooker, beach sports and extensive health and wellbeing facilities are available too, and there are both golf and tennis academies.

A good choice of restaurants, formal and informal, indoor and outdoor, makes dining a pleasure while the occasional trip to one of the nearby towns or villages by the sea brings its own reward in the shape of excellent meals at restaurants specializing in locally-caught fish.

Destination introduction

The pretty narrow streets of this old coastal village boast many different types of restaurants and bars with live music, making for a vibrant atmosphere. However just off of these streets are reminders of this old fishing village’s past. Facing a natural lagoon, views from Alvor open out on to the sea, with a choice of long open sandy beaches, and smaller coves hidden away in the cliffs to explore. The main entrance to the village church is a fine example of the great craftsmanship associated with the Manueline era.
