Il Molino

Sleeps up to: 8

A former olive mill, Il Molino has been beautifully restored to an extremely high standard by its British interior designer owner, combining the best of Italian traditions with contemporary design and every modern comfort.

Once an ancient olive mill, the stones are now used as imaginative sculptures in the gardens of lavender, rosemary, fig and pomegranate trees. These are framed by rows of silver-green olive trees, dark green cypresses and tall umbrella pines backed by woods of Mediterranean oak and chestnut trees. Situated 15 minutes drive from the nearest town of Umbertide, Il Molino lies some 500 metres above sea level with spectacular views across the rich farmlands of the Niccone Valley to Monte Acuto beyond.

Medieval Perugia, Umbria's capital, as well as beautiful Lake Trasimeno, Assisi, Montone and Gubbio are all within 45 minutes drive. With the Tuscan border only 10 minutes drive away, you're also in easy reach of the Etruscan hilltown of Cortona, the beautiful vineyards of Chianti, the ancient towns of Montepulciano Siena and San Gimignano, as well as the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence. If all that sightseeing sounds too much, you can of course just relax in the private swimming pool. Il Molino is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the splendour of rural Umbria and neighbouring Tuscany.

Shops are shut on Sundays, so the aim of the Food Hampers is to provide two light meals and two breakfasts, to allow guests to go out for one meal, then do more shopping on Monday. We can adapt these hampers to take into account allergies, dislikes and dietary requirements, or according to whether there are children in the party. For a list of possible ingredients, please see the CV Travel Directory.

Cook Service

There are a couple of very good cooks in the area who like to cook good local dishes, and are generally available to cook evening meals, though they will sometimes cook lunches by arrangement.  They sometimes prepare what they can in their own kitchen, cooking last-minute dishes at Il Molino, but are happy to cook everything at the Villa if you wish.  They charge Euro 12 per hour and their fee includes time taken shopping, travelling, serving the first two courses and clearing up as much as possible in the kitchen.  Bear in mind that shopping and travelling take a long time in the country in Italy, so a three-course meal for six people could take maybe 6/7 hours, while a four-course meal for eight may take 8 or 9 hours, obviously depending on how elaborate the meals are.

The cook service is on request. £50 Booking Fee. If you are happy with these arrangements, we need to know straight away if you would like a cook's services, to book her well ahead of time. Since neither cook offers her services exclusively to Il Molino, you may find that, especially during busy periods, both cooks are engaged already elsewhere.  We would therefore suggest you ask for and complete the cook questionnaire and return it to us as soon as possible, on the understanding that CV Travel cannot guarantee that the cooks will be free.  Please note that the cook service is not usually available on Sundays or on Public Holidays

Destination introduction

Umbria is one of the most beautiful areas of Italy.  Perugia, the region's capital. is a lively university town packed with artistic treasures (and home to Perugina chocolate), so well worth a visit, as are a host of smaller towns and villages, such as Assisi, Gubbio and Citta di Castello. Few summer visitors will want to miss a visit to Lake Trasimeno, central Italy's largest lake, where they may choose to relax on the shores, enjoy the restaurants of the lakeside towns, or take a ferry to one of the lake's islands.

Some of the most beautiful and culturally rich artistic centres in Italy are to be found in Tuscany so an easy day trip from your chosen Umbrian villa is often a highlight. Florence, with its majestic Duomo immortalised by Brunelleschi and Donatello, beautiful Siena, home of the Palio horse race and the walled town of Lucca are a must see while Arezzo and Cortona are also within easy reach.
