Casa dei Vini

Sleeps up to: 6

In the most enchanting location with views across the valley to beautiful Cetona, this house is perfect for couples or small groups. From the pool area surrounded by olive trees, Citta della Pieve can be seen romantically silhouetted on the skyline. Its attentive owner discretely ensures that his guests' needs are attended to, and a wonderful selection of wine is left on an “honesty basis” in a cool cellar built into the rock.

Only a few minutes drive from Cetona, Casa dei Vini is located on a hill in 9 hectares of timeless Tuscan countryside with cypress and gnarled olive trees.

Originally a working farm with vineyards and olive groves, along a magical avenue of ancient chestnuts, pine, beech and oak trees and a 100 year old cedar completing the picture with the pretty stone house straight ahead with its original stone staircase leading to the first floor and climbing roses.

To complete the arrival surprise, a classic view of incredibly beautiful Cetona provides an almost theatrical backdrop.

This secluded property is furnished in uncluttered, comfortable fresh country style with spacious rooms, two sitting rooms (one on each floor) and bathrooms for each bedroom.

Casa dei Vini is surrounded by an informal garden of lawns, flowers and shrubs, ideal for games and play.

The pool, located well away from the house is set into a grassy terrace amongst the olive trees with glimpses of Cetona and views towards Monte Cetona.

From here, long soporific days can be spent, enjoying vistas of open countryside in the spring, covered in broom – views of old Tuscan farmhouses, and Citta della Pieve on the skyline.

A path leads to the woodland edge on the hillside, and to a “secret” doorway, opening. The owner’s father used the cool cellar for storing huge barrels of wine. Nowadays guests are given a key and can help themselves to delicious wines on an honesty basis, settling up at the end of their stay.

For walkers, further footpaths lead through woodland and for the energetic, or for teenagers wanting adventure, a rough path leads up to large historical caves and a very interesting archaeological site.

Within easy reach of restaurants, good shopping and sightseeing and offering good privacy for couples or a reasonably priced option for one family, this charming property remains very popular with our clients.

Food Hamper

Shops are shut on Sundays, so the aim of the Food Hampers is to provide two light meals and two breakfasts, to allow guests to go out for one meal, then do more shopping on Monday. We can adapt these hampers to take into account allergies, dislikes and dietary requirements, or according to whether there are children in the party. For a list of possible ingredients, please see the CV Travel Directory.

2011 Cook Service

One of the maids Luciana, is also an experienced cook and is very happy to cook good local food for clients. She would normally do the shopping for the meal, prepare some things at home, most dishes at Vallocchio, and leave after having brought the second course to the table (though she will serve the sweet as well on request) and having cleared the kitchen. She would not normally expect to work after 9.30/10.00 pm. She does not work on Sundays or Public Holidays, except  under very special circumstances.

Options

a)  Full cook service of 6 evening meals per week Sat-Mon excluding Sunday, at 18-00 Euro per hour, plus the cost of food, to be paid locally to the cook.

b) 3 evening meals per week (not Sunday), at 18-00 Euro per hour, plus the cost of food, to be paid locally to the cook.

c) One evening per week (e.g. arrival Saturday evening meal) at 18-00 Euro per hour, plus the cost of food, to be paid locally to the cook.

Prices and Booking

The cost of the cook service is 18-00 Euro per hour. As a guideline, please bear in mind that home cooking in the country in Italy, where good food shops may be fairly far away, can take a long time, so a charge of 6 hours for a meal (depending on the number of people, how many courses, how complex, even how far the cook has to travel to get certain ingredients) may not  be considered excessive, though  usually, for a simple meal, the hours would be fewer. The cost of food would be added on to this. Since Luciana also cooks for other villas, the service is subject to availability so please inform us well in advance if you require Luciana's services.

CV Travel charges a booking fee payable in advance.

If you are happy with these arrangements, we would be grateful if you could ask for and complete the cook questionnaire and return it to us as soon as possible, so that the cook is informed well in time that you would like her to cook for your party.

Shopping

We suggest you stop on the way and shop for ‘basics’ and food for breakfast for Sunday and Monday mornings. However, if you are arriving late (planes can be delayed), and bearing in mind that almost all shops are closed on Sundays, you may wish to order a full Food Hamper, enough for two light meals, 2 breakfasts, plus ‘basics’

Destination introduction

It is to the panoramic open agricultural landscapes of the 'senese', the area of Tuscany south of Siena where many return. Delight in sampling the local wines in 'enoteche' of the wine centres of Montalcino and Montepulciano, enjoy the classic vistas from Pope Pius II's Renaissance jewel, Pienza or bathe in the thermal springs at Bagno Vignoni with its view over abandoned hill top fortifications. All these places are easily accessible from one of our villas in the ever changing landscape of the Val d'Orcia, and located not far from our villas at Cetona, an atmospheric and undiscovered jewel of a hill town, the retreat of the literary and artistic.

Dramatically placed on a hillside overlooking the valley of Valdichiana, with views of Lake Trasimeno and Monte Amiata, is the Tuscan hill town of Cortona. Whether it's a wander through the cobbled streets, a visit to the antiques market or a delicious al fresco meal in one of the trattorie, a visit to Cortona should not be missed as part of a Tuscan holiday.
