Mulino del Pita

Sleeps: 10 or 12

Nestling in a peaceful valley in the Garfagnana region of northern Tuscany, amongst acres of protected countryside, this historic Tuscan watermill with great facilities including a games room is a superb venue for a villa holiday.

For centuries, Mulino del Pita has enjoyed a special role at the heart of this unspoiled corner of Tuscany.

The mill was a regular meeting place for local villagers and this legacy of community has inspired the owner to create a superb venue for families and friends. Each of the buildings has been restored to a high standard, and every need has been considered to ensure comfort and practicality for guests. The charm of the Mill House (with large millstones still in place) is complemented by the Shepherd's Cottage, and the Ivy Barn. The Barn is a fantastic games room with a pool table, darts, giant Connect Four and other games and puzzles.

For the more active, the mill also has a croquet lawn. There are plenty of spots of sun and shade in the extensive lawned gardens with a heatable pool tucked away in a sunny and sheltered corner. Guests of all ages will enjoy the stone built-barbecue, dining al fresco and cookery and pizza making lessons can be arranged on request.

The Ania river that runs alongside the property provides much enjoyment, whether it be fishing for small trout; having stepping stone adventures across the water; or simply relaxing nearby with the sound of the running water just a few yards away.

This is a a setting of great natural beauty- Mulino del Pita looks down the valley at Coreglia Antelminelli, voted one of Italy's most beautiful villages, with the majestic Apennine Mountains forming a dramatic backdrop upstream. Early booking essential.

"the owner..who went way beyond the extra mile.."

From the Guest Book: -

"Thanks for such a great stay, the Mill is absolutely fantastic and the setting a dream.  We had a great time, unfortunately the weather did drive us away to other places but that is the “luck of the draw”.  From all of us who stayed over the 2 weeks thanks, great place, fantastic facilities, great exploring opportunities.  Highly recommended."

"What a fabulous week!  Due in no small part to your exceptional kindness as our host.  We barely left the property; it’s so stunning.  Many thanks for helping our surprise work so well and thanks once more for the cake!  We are continuing onwards on our tour of Europe, I can’t imagine that we shall come across anywhere else so beautiful, so peaceful or so welcoming."

"We have had a great week.  This is the most relaxing and peaceful place but also with so much to do.  The boys have had mini Olympics, dammed the river, built camp fires and generally had a great time exploring.  Thanks for all your kindness and recommendations which have always worked out perfectly."

Destination introduction

Lucca is an enchanting Tuscan town, a tiny gem encircled by massive walls. These walls fronted by lawns with trees, enclose a centre of atmospheric medieval streets and towers, well-preserved Romanesque churches and palazzi. Irresistible food shops, often with Liberty signs, wood pannelling and beautiful tiles offer delicious seasonal fare. Strolling through the historic centre, pausing at old-fashioned boutiques, cafes, pastry shops and visiting churches and museums is a real pleasure. Lucca's classic dishes reflect the city's wealth, torta di erbe is a Renaissance vegetable pie studded with pine nuts and raisins, fragrant with spices that only the rich could afford.

A visit to Tuscany would not be complete without visiting Pisa's famous Leaning Tower. Exploring the centre by bicycle is fun and easy but a a stroll through Pisa's streets will give you a true flavour of this Tuscan town.

A little known region of Tuscany which borders onto Liguria is the Lunigiana, known for the beauty of its mountains and an old-fashioned pace of life. Extending from the Apennines to the mouth of the Magra river, the Lunigiana is rich in mediaeval history: castles, Romanesque churches and ancient villages of extraordinary beauty dot the landscape. The coast and the pretty villages of the Cinque Terre with their superb walking trails are also within easy reach for interesting day trips.
