Porto Ulisse

Sleeps up to: 12

Very rarely a house comes our way that we know instantly is going to be a great favourite - not only for us, but for its guests. Such a property is Porto Ulisse, set in a fantastic location overlooking a white sandy beach, with views to the islands surrounding La Maddalena and its National park.

The dramatic rock of Capo d’Orso directly above Porto Ulisse was named by Homer in the Odyssey, and even today arriving at this lovely house, with an azure sea glistening behind, is truly spectacular. Tradition has it that Ulysses anchored his ship in the bay in front of the house - hence its name.

Built in the 70s by a well known architect, and published in various magazines, he reflected the owners brief perfectly -  "Understated , yet functional, informal, and wonderfully relaxing, just the splendid surroundings of nature, rocks and sea."

The wind shaped, scenic granite rocks surrounding the house in its private grounds complement the typical green Mediterranean bush, left as a unique natural decoration, with the blue sea giving a magical aura. The main house has a wonderful loggia and large dining table facing the sea, ideal for long, relaxed meals. Inside, the house is naturally welcoming, having been the scene of many happy gatherings. There is a huge sitting room with open fireplace, and a well equipped kitchen - all ideal for relaxing or play, even in bad weather! A delightful and very private guest house gives friends an opportunity to disappear!

Soporific days slip by very easily: a pathway leads to two small (virtually) private beaches of pure white sand. Here a small boat hired from the nearby old fishing port of Palau can be moored, for excursions and lunches. Elegant Porto Raphael with its yacht marina as well as other beautiful beaches are within easy reach as are the beautiful islands of Maddalena accessed by boat. Important archaelogical stone age tombs are within 20 kms, and the spectacular Capo Teoda on Sardinia’s northern tip looks straight at Bonafacio, Corsica. For a few frenetic weeks in late July/August, the island wakes up and “comes alive” with the beau monde, bringing beautiful boats and beautiful people. Restaurants are in demand al fresco night clubs open up - then suddenly, it’s over, autumn beckons and the island finds itself again.

Porto Ulisse is very special, and will appeal to understated people, who whilst near to the fashionable Costa Smeralda and its resorts, would much prefer to relax and enjoy this charming family house to the full. Sitting at sunset, perhaps after an energetic climb to the famous wind-shaped rock above, watching the rocks turn to pink, enjoying the proximity to nature in this wildly dramatic setting is an experience never to be forgotten.
