La Scorticata

Sleeps up to: 10

In an idyllic position on a hillside, set in 250 hectares of private land, surrounded by chestnut and oak woods, the spacious and beautifully furnished La Scorticata is the perfect home for guests looking for a truly relaxing break. Furthermore, reputedly the best golf course in Italy is only a short drive away.

What better way to spend a holiday with family or friends than in the heart of the Italian countryside, immersed in nature? La Scorticata is an elegant farmhouse dating back to the 1700s, furnished with flare by its Roman owner and in keeping with the informal style of this country setting. Inside, tasteful furnishings are offset by hand made terracotta tiled floors and the soft colours of the walls, door frames and shutters which all add to a welcoming atmosphere. Each bedroom, with its own bathroom or shower room, is unique in style and will appeal to guests of all ages. Budding chefs in the group will appreciate the large working kitchen with a solid wooden country table, fireplace for cooking and french windows which lead from the kitchen out to a patio area. If organised in advance, meals can also be prepared by the maid of La Scorticata. The large relaxing sitting room with huge sofas, interesting books and wooden beamed ceilings is the best place to unwind indoors while outside, a terrace overlooking the gardens is perfect for enjoying the warmth of the summer.

Guests love the vast green lawns which roll down to a pool area encircled by pretty roses and plants - a good spot to lie back on a sun lounger, then cool off with a leisurely swim. Woodland walks nearby can even uncover orchids, wild mushrooms and woodland animals such as wild boar. Keen golfers will delight in the proximity of the 18 hole Sutri golf course, only a 15 minute drive away, whereas others may prefer a trip to the thermal springs at the Terme dei Papi, a favourite of the Etruscans and then the Romans. Vetralla with its historic centre and Fransiscan church or the coastal town of Tarquinia with its sandy beaches are also within easy reach.

It would be impossible not to take advantage of the proximity of La Scorticata to Rome. Just a one hour drive away, it means that day trips to the fashionable shops of Via Condotti, the Vatican city or the Roman ruins of the Forum or Colosseum are all within easy reach.

We can adapt these hampers to take into account allergies, dislikes and dietary requirements, or according to whether there are children in the party. For a list of possible ingredients, please see ask.

Cook Service

You may wish to avail yourself of the services of a cook while you are on holiday, allowing yourself the luxury of not having to prepare a meal, but at the same time not having to drive back from a restaurant in the dark (and being able to drink as much as you please!).

Cooks will shop for and prepare meals, usually in the evening. Their duties include laying the table, serving up to the second course, and clearing up in the kitchen. They do not usually like to work later than 9.30pm; neither do they work on Sundays or Bank Holidays, though they may leave a light meal for these days by arrangement.

Destination introduction

Northern and Southern Italy meet in Italy's beautiful capital city of Rome. Home of the Vatican, the first stop for most visitors is the wealth of artistic treasures in its museums. There is too much to take in on one day but the Roman Forum and Colosseum are an easy walk from the central shopping streets, as well as the pretty cobbled streets of the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish steps and Piazza Navona.

North of Rome is the spa town of Viterbo also known for the beauty of the surrounding hills, fine wine and Etruscan history not far from the villa La Scorticata. Further north and nearer the Umbrian border is the area around Rieti which is the central point of the Italian peninsular and a good base for the Apenines and the Sabine hills, where the elegant Palazzo Parisi and La Meridiana are located.

The stunning national park of Circeo lies on the southern coast of Lazio, and has a mixture of sandy and rocky beaches.‑ The mountainous inland area provides a dramatic backdrop for the appealing sandy beaches of Sabaudia and Terracina, while the national park of Circeo is a haven for nature lovers; the lakes and marshlands are full of wildlife such as storks, buzzards and herons as well as eucalyptus groves and wild flowers. It is here where the beautiful Villa Delfino is to be found.

Ponza is a jewel of an island only 8 kms long and just a short boat trip from the mainland, midway between Rome and Naples. Part of the archipelago of the Ponziane Islands (Ponza, Gavi, Zannone & Palmarola), Ponza is a volcanic island, made of beautiful cliffs spaced by tiny beaches and small bays.‑ The main town of Ponza, opens like an amphitheatre above the port onto two levels. The terrace level has walks with shops & restaurants, the lower level bustles with the characteristic life of the port.
