Casa Fontana

Sleeps up to: 8

Nothing can prepare one for the spectacular arrival in the turquoise hued harbour, and sight of a beautiful villa perched high on golden brown volcanic rocks above this enchanting town. This is Ponza, an oasis in the Tyrrhenian Sea - a bolt hole for smart Romans who adore this idyllic and unpretentious Island - and Casa Fontana, an understated, yet utterly gorgeous property.

Ponza is famous for its spectacular scenic beauty, lush vegetation, tiny rock beaches dotted with Roman remains. Steeped in history, and located midway between Rome and Naples, it is a short ferry ride from the legendary mainland beaches of Anzio where Mussolini was interned for a short while. Mainly pedestrianised, life in Ponza moves at its own pace only waking up in the summer, whilst life at Casa Fontana is simply an ongoing experience.

A touch of Greece yet essentially Italian, the house is white with blue shutters, cool floors with tiles from Vietri which compliment an eclectic mixture of antiques and “shabby chic” furniture. The colour is overwhelmingly white – sofas, chairs, curtains, fluffy white bath towels - simple yet elegant with huge windows framing a backdrop of azure sea.

The owner has thought of everything for her guests ‘ comfort: lots of books, an ice-maker, hi-fi/video, heating for the winter months, even a fax to intrude on the idyll. A terrace with marble table for 12 makes it a fantastic spot for sitting out and watching life go by in this enchanting small port, built in Napoleonic times - the ultimate romantic spot for dinner under the stars. From here there is a scented garden with climbing roses, aromatic lavender, bougainvillea oleander, palm trees, lush sub tropical vegetation, and then down to the mosaic tiled plunge pool area, and separate Turkish steam room – a fantastic spot to sit and sunbathe or sit in shade.

Life here is a dream: a meal cooked by the (unobtrusive) resident housekeeper, a short walk to a trattoria or hire a boat and swim/snorkel in deserted coves along the dramatic coastline of towering cliffs. You can even scuba dive in crystal clear waters with the Ponza Diving Centre. Fontana is a place for honeymooners, hedonists – or just escapees from a stressful lifestyle: ask us to arrange a magical stay there for you this summer.

Destination introduction

Northern and Southern Italy meet in Italy's beautiful capital city of Rome. Home of the Vatican, the first stop for most visitors is the wealth of artistic treasures in its museums. There is too much to take in on one day but the Roman Forum and Colosseum are an easy walk from the central shopping streets, as well as the pretty cobbled streets of the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish steps and Piazza Navona.

North of Rome is the spa town of Viterbo also known for the beauty of the surrounding hills, fine wine and Etruscan history not far from the villa La Scorticata. Further north and nearer the Umbrian border is the area around Rieti which is the central point of the Italian peninsular and a good base for the Apenines and the Sabine hills, where the elegant Palazzo Parisi and La Meridiana are located.

The stunning national park of Circeo lies on the southern coast of Lazio, and has a mixture of sandy and rocky beaches.‑ The mountainous inland area provides a dramatic backdrop for the appealing sandy beaches of Sabaudia and Terracina, while the national park of Circeo is a haven for nature lovers; the lakes and marshlands are full of wildlife such as storks, buzzards and herons as well as eucalyptus groves and wild flowers. It is here where the beautiful Villa Delfino is to be found.

Ponza is a jewel of an island only 8 kms long and just a short boat trip from the mainland, midway between Rome and Naples. Part of the archipelago of the Ponziane Islands (Ponza, Gavi, Zannone & Palmarola), Ponza is a volcanic island, made of beautiful cliffs spaced by tiny beaches and small bays.‑ The main town of Ponza, opens like an amphitheatre above the port onto two levels. The terrace level has walks with shops & restaurants, the lower level bustles with the characteristic life of the port.
