Kardamyli Introduction
Kardamyli is quite enchanting – a seaside village with a history dating back to Homeric times. Its literary connections include the great Greek writer, Nikos Kazantzakis, whose famous character. Zorba the Greek, was inspired by a local man, and Patrick Leigh Fermor, writer and traveler, who has made his home in Kardamyli. Distinguished by the handsome stone mansions and tall Maniot towers of the old village, and with an attractive little harbour, Kardamyli is set between the calm blue waters of the Messinian Gulf and the grandeur of the Taygetos Mountains. Ideal for walking holidays, with well-marked routes along the ancient kalderimia, or mule paths, the stunning scenery around the village repays exploration on foot, by bike or by car, and includes the breathtaking wildness of the 10-mile long Viros Gorge. With a long pebbly beach and several smaller bays, there is good swimming and Kardamyli is well-provided with pleasant tavernas and cafes and has a useful selection of shops.
