The Westin Resort

Family Resort

The fabulous Costa Navarino Resort complex, situated on the unspoiled and largely undiscovered coastline of the province of Messinia in the southern Peloponnese, promises to be one of the most exciting new holiday destinations in the Mediterranean.  With facilities to rival those of any international resort, and a strong environmental policy, the Westin Resort, the second of the two hotels to open, occupies a magnificent setting on a gently sloping hillside that meets the vivid waters of the Ionian Sea at a kilometre-long beach of white sand. Inspired by the stone villages of the region, the 445-room hotel is designed as clusters of low-rise villas where traditional building materials and architectural influences are very much in evidence in the form of arches and courtyards that allow the wonderful Greek sunlight into every corner yet provide shade and views for everyone. About a third of the very comfortable rooms and suites have private infinity pools, and these are complemented by the large communal lagoon pool and an exciting waterpark.

The emphasis is on a healthy holiday, with a huge spa and thalassotherapy centre for the exclusive use of hotel guests, a stunning 18-hole golf course right beside the sea, gym and tennis facilities and plenty of walking, though buggies and bikes are available when it gets too hot to walk far. A neighbouring ‘village’ provides such diversions as an open air cinema, that staple of Greek summer entertainment, and a shopping market as well as designer retail outlets and a typically Greek souvlaki bar. Hotel dining options offer an interesting variety and include an American Diner, Irish pub food, Italian and Greek restaurants and an attractive Pool Bar.

Families are particularly well-catered for, with special play areas for children, children’s menus and family rooms.

Lots of activities or sheer lazy self-indulgence? It’s up to you, but take the time to explore a few of the local sights, such as the amazing Voidokoilia Beach, the attractive little town of Pylos with its ancient fortress, or Gialova with its lagoon and protected bird preserve.

Gialova Introduction

Gialova is set on Navarino Bay, in the southwestern Peloponnese. It is a very small seaside village, one that has retained its traditional Greek character, and one that has some outstanding features. Its 1.5 kilometre long sandy beach, known as ‘Golden Beach’, stretches from the village itself west to Old Navarino Castle that dates from the 13th century, and the beach is in fact a sand bar that separates the sea from Gialova Lagoon, a natural site of great ecological importance.  The lovely beach is shaded here and there by trees, and in the village itself a row of good tavernas lines the beachfront in a delightfully relaxed setting. In fact, relaxation is what a holiday in or near Gialova is all about, but there is no lack of interesting places to visit: climb up to Nestor’s Palace for a breathtaking view of the wonderful Voidomati Bay, almost a perfect circle of spectacular beach, or visit charming Pylos with its well-preserved castle.
