Torri e Merli

Boutique Hotel

The ancient olive groves of Paxos, where the gnarled grey trunks seem to grow out of the very boulders that lie scattered across the hillsides, are home to an extraordinary collection of buildings that date back to Venetian times. One of these, a kilometre from the immensely attractive harbour village of Lakka, has been converted into a boutique hotel of simple but stunningly aesthetic sophistication.

The origins of the building as a fortified manor house of the eighteenth century are still to be observed clearly, in the turrets and crenellations from which the hotel takes its name. The interior, however, has been opened up with a very modern use of space. Glass, chrome and steel contrast with traditional stone and wood and subtle lighting effects create a relaxed yet romantic atmosphere.

There are just seven exquisite suites, each named after one of the wild plants and herbs that grow on these hillsides. Each one is decorated almost entirely in white, with just a few touches of muted colour in the piles of scattered cushions and the bed linen of the king-size beds. Some rather voluptuous bedroom furniture is offset by modern lighting and bathrooms with a purely contemporary approach to design. Arranged over two floors, suites have either a small garden terrace or a balcony, with views of the turquoise sea or the gloriously natural gardens. Each suite has a sitting area with a deeply comfortable sofa and armchair and a writing desk.

Modern lamps throw their light on old tiled floors, and everywhere there are white flowers, beautifully displayed in vases of classic urn shape while single succulents show off their shapes in glass cubes.

Torre e Merli is very much a retreat for grown-ups who appreciate the thought of a holiday where the emphasis is on inaction rather than frantic activity. The cellars have been converted into a tisaniera where guests may imbibe herbal infusions and enjoy a massage, while a large pool occupies a peaceful setting amidst silent olive trees.

The Italian influence is still strong in Paxos, whether it is in the form of an ancient Venetian building given new life or in the vibrant street life and surprisingly chic restaurants of Lakka, just under a kilometre from the hotel. The combination is irresistible.

Please note, the hotel is not suitable for young children.

Lakka Introduction

The large, deep and very well sheltered harbour of Lakka has always attracted many yachtsmen, and the sight of yachts large and small, from all over the Mediterranean, swinging at anchor on the vividly turquoise water, is quite enchanting.

The bay is fringed by beautiful tree-shaded beaches, where the white pebbles give way to gently shelving sand once you are in the water, making this an ideal spot for families with children. Life in Lakka centres on the sea of course, and there are some good restaurants serving fresh fish, but the international influence can be seen in some excellent Italian food too.
