Villa Helonaki has any number of sophisticated facilities yet still displays many of the charming features of Greek vernacular architecture that make these island houses so pleasing. Local stone is worked into steps and terraces and shady nooks where green plants flourish, while Italianate urns and balustrades crown the villa, in true Ionian style. At the front of the property a south-facing swimming pool of sophisticated design has ample room for sunbathing. To one side, a shady stone courtyard with beautiful views is complemented by a lovely tented dining pavilion, and contrasts with a traditional but organic herb and vegetable garden from which guests are welcome to help themselves. There are two bedrooms in the villa, making it ideal for a small family with older children or two couples, and a separate studio provides extra accommodation for guests. Helonaki is beautifully located on a steep hillside behind Perigiali and the views are amazing – down over the fjord-like bay, scattered with islands and busy with small craft of all kinds. The amenities of Nidri are plentiful and the coming and going of people can occasionally be heard, without disturbing the usually peaceful location of the villa.
