Kassiopi Introduction
Once an isolated fishing village, Kassiopi is now a very attractive, busy little harbour town; a good centre for shopping, entertainment and excursions, where tradition and tourism meet with happy results. Internet cafes exist side-by-side with shops selling exquisite locally-made lace and embroidery, bread 'boutiques' and 'designer' coffee bars vie for your attention with excellent clothes and accessories shops. Kassiopi’s headland fortress is one of Corfu’s most ancient dating back to Roman and Byzantine times, and has recently been partly restored and benefits from wonderful illumination. The village church, too, is an archaeological treasure dating from the 16th century but built on the ruins of an ancient Greek temple. With good beaches, water sports and an excellent selection of restaurants and bars, there is something for all tastes. Teenagers love Kassiopi for its lively nightlife and trendy shopping; parents love it because it keeps the children happy.
The last shepherds left the hard life of tending their goats and sheep on the rocky hillsides above Kassiopi many years ago now, but the tranquillity remains largely undisturbed, and forms the setting for some beautiful villas. The views from here are sublime and penetrate deep into the heart of southern Albania.
