History

County Monaghan came into being in 1585, when the English lord deputy of Ireland, Sir John Perrot met the Irish chieftains of the area who requested that Ulster be divided into counties, and land from Airgíalla be apportioned to each of the McMahon chiefs. County Monaghan is the birthplace of several famous Irish writers and artists, including Patrick Kavanagh, George Collie and Sir Shane Leslie, 3rd Baronet of Glaslough, who was the first cousin of British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill.
