The Old Vicarage

Sleeps up to 9

The Old Vicarage is a square, Georgian, pale brick house situated in very extensive grounds. It has a walled garden with large borders, a parterre, a small arboretum and paved terraces with garden furniture on three sides for the capture of sunshine at all times of the day.

There is a hard tennis court and an outdoor swimming pool (heated 1st April to 30th October). It has stables and outbuildings, one containing a table tennis table in a lit but unheated space. Another contains bicycles for use of the guests.

The local village of Great Hockham is in the centre of the Brecklands, an area of environmental sensitivity. Within 500m of the house is Thetford Forest Park, 50,000 acres of woodland offering bike and walking trails. Within the Forest is a high wire forest experience. In close proximity to the house is the Peddars Way, a Roman road which joins the Norfolk Coastal Path providing 96.5 miles of walks through National Nature Trails. This consists of leafy paths and tree-lined trails.

The village has a public house and local shops can be found at Watton, a market town 6 miles away. The Georgian town of Wymondham is a 15 minute drive and offers a variety of boutiques and gift shops. Norwich is 25 minutes by car as is the Georgian town of Bury St Edmunds. Newmarket, with its two racecourses and busy racing calendar, is a 30 minute drive. The famous beaches of Brancaster and Holkham are about 30 miles away. The historic houses and gardens of Norfolk are within easy reach.

Guest Book

"A grand driveway sweeps around the large expanse of lawn to a majestic Georgian house. The kitchen is particularly inviting and well equipped for families. The CV Travel Britain team enjoyed exploring the garden with its many places to sit and to play, from the tennis court, the swimming pool, and the box hedged formal garden".

Guests have said: -

"There was more than enough room for all of us to do what we want whether it was to read by the fire, watch a DVD or play croquet in the walled garden. We all adored the house and would have loved to have been here in warmer weather to enjoy the pool.."

Destination introduction

For enjoying the best of British seaside reports just 20 minutes from the famous Southwold Beach resort on the Suffolk coastline is Home Farm, a homely and spacious farmhouse set in the midst of 37 acres of its own farmland and fields” – Metlife, April 2009.

Both Norfolk and Suffolk are easily reached from London and their beauty and interest make them perfect destinations for a short break, a long weekend or a longer family holiday.

Norfolk is a county greatly dominated by water – whether it is the endless sandy beaches of the coast or the waterways of the Norfolk Broads. Historic houses, market towns and the tall spires of ‘wool’ churches punctuate the gently undulating countryside, where huge tracts of heathland and forest contrast with richly cultivated areas. The City of Norwich beckons the visitor with its 900-year old cathedral, its Normal castle and enormous open market.

Suffolk is predominantly agricultural, with ancient and beautiful market towns such as Bury St Edmunds and Lavenham to visit, and beautiful villages where the houses are decorated with the elaborate plasterwork unique to the county. An ideal county for walking, cycling or horse-riding, and one where car expeditions are always rewarding, ending up at some delightful pub, tracking down a haunted house, beachcombing or simply admiring the watermills and gentle landscapes immortalized by John Constable.
