Destination introduction

New for 2009, CV Travel introduces a hand-picked collection of British houses from romantic cottages & converted stables to elegant manor houses in the West Country, The Cotswolds and Norfolk, accommodating 2-22 guests and carefully chosen for their character, quality and facilities” – Good Housekeeping, March 2009.

There simply is no other city like London, with such a rich variety of things to see and do, all year round. From the most ancient monuments of British history such as the Tower of London, to the very contemporary London Eye; from the British Museum with its exhibits from  every part of the world and every period of its history to the great plant collection at Kew. From viewing the latest ceelebrity waxwork at Madame Tussauds to sampling the fare at the most recently-opened gastro-pub – London’s possibilities are inexhaustible.

A stay in London can be as short or as long as you like, and none of it will be wasted time. Modern London offers vivid street life and markets, superb shopping to suit all pockets, an incredible choice of restaurants and pubs, and as much culture as you could wish for. Some of the greatest museums and art galleries in the world are to be found in London – most with free entry. When  the weather is fine, the London parks and palaces beckon, but if the weather is poor, indoor amusements are countless. Concerts, operas, theatre and sporting events – London attracts the world’s greatest performers and players.

London was first founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago, and has evolved over many centuries, surviving great disasters such as the Plague and the Great Fire, and eventually the Blitz of WWII. Today ancient and modern buildings stand side-by-side and vie for a place on the ever-changing skyline. London repays exploration. It is not only busy streets and imposing buildings, endless traffic and swarming crowds. It is also hidden gardens and quiet corners, Thames views and silent churchyards where poets lie buried.

Events

There are hundreds of festivals and events in London, some of the best include Chelsea Flower Show every May, Portobello Film Festival every September, Notting Hill Carnival, Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park and the Christmas market on South Bank – all nearby to Kensington House, Upper Flat and Lower Flat.
