The Cowshed

Sleeps up to: 4

Set amidst open fields, with a private walled garden, it is just 5 minutes’ drive to the magnificent surfing beach at Polzeath.

The Cowshed is one of three 18th century stone barns, retaining many original features in Cornish stone, wood and slate, but with a touch of the unexpected in surprisingly stylish interiors. Fabrics and furnishings in muted colours contrast with steel and high-gloss finishes and are highlighted with splashed of acid colours.

The Cowshed provides accommodation for all seasons – a calm and serene summer holiday haven and a cosy cocoon of a hideaway in winter. The standard is that of a luxurious self-catering property, and on arrival you will find the fridge stocked with the basic requirements for your first breakfast in Cornwall.

On the same site as Mill Rock, the house lies amidst open farmland and is ideally equipped for both adults and children, with a vegetable garden, resident chickens, a games room, and an outdoor heated swimming pool. Indoors the house is well-provided with toys and games.

First Floor: Spiral staircase to: Spacious Master double bedroom with bathroom en suite • Double bedroom (can be twin) • Large shower room

Sustainable Tourism

Mill Rock, The Cowshed and The Honey Barn have been converted with the local and global environment in mind.

The houses are heated by a geothermal system which takes thermal energy from the earth and converts it into heat. This renewable form of energy should save as much as 12 tonnes of carbon dioxide emmissions a year, the equivalent to the CO2 absorbed by 600 mature trees! Any residual heat from the underfloor heating goes towards heating the water for the houses. The owners hope to be self sufficient in energy supplies but do also have gas on site as a back up.

They are currently assessing whether to install a windmill to generate some of their electricity requirements.

Their bore hole allows them to drink pure filtered water, free of all the added chemicals present in water provided by the water boards. Waste water is treated on site, recycled back to water authority quality and fed back into the streams.

The owners endeavour to re-cycle as much rubbish as possible and encourage guests to help achieve a cleaner, greener environment.

Sports

Life in north Cornwall can be action packed if you want it to be. Try surfing, coasteering, rock climbing, waterskiing, cycling, mackerel fishing, walking or golf.

Out and about

For those days when you are after something less energetic there’s the Maritime Museum in Falmouth or The Eden Project less than an hour away. There are so many beautiful gardens to visit, while the chance to hear the ‘ Fisherman’s Friends’ sea shanty group, singing on the harbour on a Friday evening at Port Isaac, is a unique experience.

Child friendly restaurants

The Waterfront - sea views, kids could play on the beach while waiting for food to arrive The Mowhay - just very friendly staff but no views. The Inn at St Kew - garden to play in and eat outside if it’s a nice evening - they usually do barbecues in the garden in the summer.

Out-of-season breaks

The beaches are empty and Cornwall is wild and wonderful in the winter, so why not come down for a three or four day off season break. After a bracing walk along the coast path, or a round of golf you can snuggle up by the wood-burning stove, get out a good book, and tuck into a traditional Cornish cream tea. Perhaps join one of the local ‘hands-on’ courses such as Thai cooking, stone or wood sculpture or even surfing. The Eden Project is open throughout the winter and with less people around you can make the most of the biomes.

Destination introduction

The view is only interrupted by the occasional walkers, joggers and cyclists who pass along the bottom of the property, between the garden and the shore, on the Camel Trail – a track that traces the route of an old riverside railway line, from Padstow to Bodmin. Most will look up, captivated by the sight of the house, wondering who’s lucky enough to be inside. If only for the week, that’s you” - Independent on Sunday, May 2009.

"Go deep sea fishing or try your hand at catching sea bass from the beach followed by a cliff top walk to enjoy the stunning views” - Living Edge Magazine, August 2011.

Cornwall has some of the wildest and most dramatic scenery in Britain, with an incomparable choice of beautiful beaches. With gently shelving sandy beaches that are ideal for family holidays, hidden coves backed by steep cliffs, and excellent conditions for surfing, sailing and a variety of extreme water sports, there is truly something for everyone. Cliffs, coves, castles and caves that until 100 years ago were the domain of smugglers, blur the lines between history and legend.

Inland, heather and gorse-covered moors studded with the remains of Cornwall’s heritage, including Bronze Age and Early Christian sites, are a lure to walkers and include the granite towers and stone chimneys that are all that remain of the tin-mining industry that dominated Cornwall for over 4000 years. Walkers also have no less than 500 miles of coastal footpaths to explore.

Getting to Cornwall is facilitated by good road and rail links and the Newquay International airport.
