La Bergerie

Sleeps up to: 8

Set in beautiful mature gardens, La Bergerie is everything that we imagine when we think of an Old Provencal house. Close to the entrance to the charming village of La Garde Freinet, the property is just a couple of minutes walk away from the centre of the village with its many restaurants and shops.

Dating back to the 18th century, La Bergerie has retained its calm, utterly French atmosphere, thanks to a sympathetic restoration. Built of stone, it is set in 6000 square metres of land and overlooks the hills and chestnut orchards of the Massif des Maures. Green lawns, mature trees, a walled pool area and numerous terraces provide the perfect setting for an idyllic summer holiday. (The walled swimming pool is located below the house, can effectively be gated when not in use and it also benefits from a new heating system). With solid stone walls ensuring that the house remains cool even in the height of summer, La Bergerie has all that we expect of rural France – a vast and practical kitchen, a splendid open fireplace in the living room and pretty bedrooms. The ground floor living areas open on to a charming outdoor dining area, with a large table set in the shade of the trees, looking as if it is about to star in one of those Merchant-Ivory family sagas. The village of La Garde Freinet borders the property, and is a delight, with its great selection of restaurants, its comprehensive range of useful shops, and its twice-weekly market. From time to time there are also fairs and festivals, art exhibitions and concerts. For more sophisticated shopping and amusement, Saint-Tropez is 19 kilometres away.

Note: Guardian of the property lives unobtrusively in a separate apartment to the rear of the property.

Destination introduction

The fine vista of 'Belle Epoque' houses along the sea front, the wonderful 'buzzing' atmosphere of the one time small fishing village of Saint-Tropez, provide a number of reasons why the rich and famous continue to flock to this fabulous area. Set on the lovely blue water of the Bay of Saint-Tropez, this modern version of a medieval town is most popular for the line of yachts along the quai, and the facing line of terrace cafés. Saint-Tropez became "St-Trop" when the show business people, artists and writers all fell under the spell of this charming little port in the 1950's. Since then it has become the 'in' vacation spot for chic Parisians and 'La Jet Set'.

There is however another side to Saint-Tropez. Early in the morning at the Place aux Herbes one can find fruit vegetables and flowers and watch the local fishermen selling their new catch. The beaches too are wonderful, and there are at least forty on the peninsula. Whilst the verdant hills cocooning it provide a wonderful contrast with the villages within them prefect hideaways, yet still close to the action of the coast.
