Apokryfo Tradition Suites & Houses

Family-run Character Hotel

The name could hardly be more appropriate – this small boutique hotel has grown out of a cluster of old stone houses hidden away at the edge of the village of Lofou, in the foothills of Mount Olympus in Cyprus, and is now an award winning property, taking the crown for 'Best Traditional Hotel' in Cyrpus from Conde Naste Traveller in 2010.

In the 1860’s the village was a busy little community producing the ancient and celebrated wine called ‘Commandaria’, a dessert wine that dates back to ancient Hellenic times. The traditional stone houses, once the homes, wineries and stables of these wine producers, have been skillfully renovated by the owners, local architect Vakis Hadjikyriakou and his interior designer wife, Diana. Many of the original features have been retained and their subtle co-existence with modern facilities and exquisite design elements displays a restful sense of balance that is most effective in establishing the right atmosphere for a wonderful holiday.

The accommodation lacks nothing in contemporary comfort, with king-size beds, satellite TV, DVD/CD player, WiFi Internet access, central heating and air-conditioning, while emphasizing the classic beauty of traditional Greek village architecture. There is a choice between rooms and studios in the main house, with balconies or private courtyards, and accommodation in separate houses with private courtyards of their own. Guests can enjoy the beautiful communal swimming pool, a well-equipped gym and a wine tasting cellar, a library complete with board games, DVD’s and walking maps.

Three golf courses are nearby and sailing excursions an be arranged.  The Agrino restaurant serves wonderful Cypriot specialities, with the choice, in summer, of dining indoors or in the charming courtyard. After-dinner drinks can be served on the rooftop terrace with its lovely views over the village.

Apokryfo is perfectly located for a holiday that combines rest and activity in just the right proportions.

Destination introduction

The village of Lofou derives its name from a word meaning ‘hill’. Situated 800 m above sea-level and 25 kms northwest of Limassol, it is shaped like an amphitheatre and is a good example of an ancient village built well away from the coast and well hidden in order to escape the depredations of the marauding pirates of the Middle Ages.

Today’s visitor to the village experiences a sense of stepping back in time. Apart from weekends and a few weeks in August, the village is quiet and seems deserted. A maze of narrow cobbled streets lined with old stone buildings .deceives the eye and makes the village seem like one giant optical illusion, where every alley is curved, and all the buildings interlink on various levels.

Lofou is a beautiful and enigmatic curiosity.
