Emerald Residence

Sleeps up to: 6

Could there be a more idyllic setting than this? Three stylish villas of contemporary tropical design, situated directly on the beachfront at superb Kao Laem Noi beach, in Bang Po Bay. Just a few stepping stones set in a lawn separate you from the dazzlingly white beach and the shimmering aquamarine ocean.

The Emerald Residence perfectly combines traditional Thai values with sleek modern styling – a contrast that is represented here in the glass pavilion of the sleeping quarters, with their breathtaking sea views and the shady interior of the wooden living areas. Surrounded by grassy gardens, and connected by wooden decking, the pavilions feature large foldaway windows that allow full appreciation of the sense of freedom. The living area of each villa extends out on to a covered deck with cushioned sun loungers, from which it takes remarkably little effort to slip into the infinity edge pool. Perfectly private, there is a real sense of relaxation at the Emerald Residence, with beautiful views wherever you look – out across the beach to the sunset, or over your shoulder to the green hills that back the property. Two of the villas have two double, en suite, bedrooms, the third is especially suitable for a family, with a third bedroom featuring bunk beds. The sleeping pavilions also have ground floor TV rooms. All bedrooms are air-conditioned.

There is no doubt that the days will pass effortlessly in such a setting, but Bang Po offers a variety of unsophisticated diversions, with several interesting excursions, spa facilities, and a few restaurants where seafood is a speciality. A little further afield is Bophut, for example, with its traditional fishing village and noted restaurants, or Chaweng, with reputedly the best shopping and nightlife on Koh Samui.

Destination introduction

Until the Nineteen-Seventies, Koh Samui, Thailand’s third largest island, was isolated, self-sufficient and largely unknown, with no roads at all. The tide of tourism changed all that and now Samui attracts large numbers of visitors. The magnificent, palm-fringed, beaches of white sand are no doubt the main attraction, but Koh Samui has more to offer if you feel inclined to move from those alluring beaches. Apart from the usual water sports, there are possibilities for exploring the rainforest on the back of an elephant, or swinging through the tree canopy, for deep-sea fishing with a very real chance of catching something impressive, for diving and kite-boarding.
