The Plettenberg occupies a wonderfully elevated position, overlooking Plettenberg Bay, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Miles of golden beach receive the never-ending tribute of the ceaseless breakers, visited by breaching whales in winter and pods of dolphins all year round – a sight that can be observed easily from the terraces of this lovely hotel. The guest rooms and suites are all beautifully decorated and comfortably equipped for all seasons, with both air-conditioning and underfloor heating. Decorating schemes take their inspiration from the colours and textures of the bay.

In addition to the main hotel, there is also the completely separate and very private accommodation afforded by the Beach House and Lookout Villa, both of which have their own plunge pool and kitchen facilities, with full access to all the hotel amenities. Situated right at the end of the famous Garden Route, half an hour from Knysna, the luxuriously comfortable Plettenberg is ideally located for exploration of the local nature reserves. This is the home of vast expanses of unspoiled Cape flora, the delicately-balanced ecosystems of wetlands and lagoons, thrilling forests, sand dunes and endless beaches.

Room Description

Standard twin or double rooms ahve the same style and decor as the deluxe category, but do not have sea views.

Deluxe doubles are slightly larger and have small step-on balconies. Each has a different view, either of the garden, or a side sea view. All have walk-in showers.

Deluxe sea view rooms also spacious and have the same small balconies, but full sea views.

Suites consist of a seperate lounge and bedroom and have fantastic sea views.

Premier Suites also have a lounge and bedroom, and have French doors with step-on balconiesand varied views of the sea.

Beach House is next to the main building and has two en-suite bedrooms, large sitting room with fireplace, a dining room and small service kitchen.  The main bedroom leads to a sundeck where there is a private plunge pool and superb views of the bay.

Lookout Villa overlooks Plettenberg Bay and has 3 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, an open-plan lounge and dining. area on split level, and a galley kitchen. The main bedroom leads out to the decking and private pool.

Plettenberg Bay and the surrounding bays are renowned for miles of un-spoilt sandy beaches and its peace and tranquility.  However, the natural world plays a huge part in the area and one of the most fascinating activities on this coast is whale watching.

The local golf course is set in a nature reserve and is rated in one of the top 50 in South Africa. An 18 hole course, it also has 4 tgennis courts and 2 bowling greens.  There is another 18 hole course at Goose Valley.

Horse-riding is also available locally, as are canoeing, kayaking, marine excursions and various other watersports.

Destination introduction

From its famous coastline dotted with picturesque holiday spots, to the sweeping mountain ranges, The Garden Route and Eastern Cape is magically South African the N2 highway, running east from Mossel Bay to Port Elizabeth, passes through some of the world's most attractive coastal scenery - the Garden Route. The journey begins in Mossel Bay - first discovered by the Portuguese navigator, Bartholomeu Dias, in 1488. Attractions here include the Bartholomeu Museum and Old Post Office Tree. Bungee jumping and bridge swinging is offered at nearby Gouritz River mouth and daily boat trips to Seal Island and shark-cage diving draws many visitors.

Contrasting sharply with the lush coast, Oudtshoorn is reached by travelling inland over the Robinson Pass. This area is the focal point of the ostrich industry and guided tours of show farms explain all the facets of the ostrich business culminating in an 'ostrich derby'. The Cango Caves were formed more than 65 million years ago and are ranked among the most remarkable of Africa's natural wonders. Guided daily tours yield a marvellous fantasia of weirdly sculpted, multicoloured stalagmites and stalactites. Nearby attraction, the Cango Wildlife Ranch, houses one of the world's top cheetah-breeding centres.

George, the largest of the Garden Route towns, is reached by returning to the coast via the scenic Outeniqua Pass. The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe is a narrow-gauge steam train traversing the spectacular Wilderness lakes area between George and Knysna. Celebrated for its fresh oysters and fine hardwood furniture is the historical town of Knysna located on the banks of the estuary and often referred to as the 'Jewel of the Garden Route'.

Plettenberg Bay is a beach-lover's paradise, where long stretches of soft sand give way to azure seas. Almost 40 species of whales and dolphins have been recorded here and are to be seen on various boat excursions. For the brave at heart there is a treetop canopy tour through the Tsitsikamma forest or bungee jumping off the 216m Bloukrans River Bridge - the highest jump in the world! Completing the Garden Route is the friendly city of Port Elizabeth - gateway to the malaria-free game reserves of the Eastern Cape.

Leisure activities include golf, bowls, horse riding, angling, sailing, blackwater tubing, abseiling, mountain biking, scuba-diving and surfing, as well as hiking and bird-watching in the nearby Robberg, Keurbooms River and Tsitsikamma nature reserves.

Completing the Garden Route is South Africa's fifth largest city, Port Elizabeth, the economic hub of the Eastern Cape. Tourist attractions here include scuba-diving, safe swimming beaches, a Snake Park, Aquarium, and the performing dolphins, seals and penguins at the Oceanarium. The National Festival of Arts, in nearby Grahamstown, takes place annually in July.
