Shamwari Game Reserve

Steeped in history and dating back to a time when a multitude of game roamed wild and free, Shamwari, meaning ‘friend’ in the Shona language, is today an exclusive 20,000 hectare, private, award winning and internationally recognised game reserve within easy reach of the Garden Route.

Shamwari has no fewer than six game lodges, each sharing the same imaginative approach that guarantees the highest levels of accommodation, service and cuisine. The exclusive lodges offer accommodation that is air-conditioned with en suite bathrooms, and they range from Long Lee Manor, which dates from 1910 and provides a distinctive colonial experience, to Eagles Cragg, which offers the ultimate in luxury, including private pools for each suite, and there is also Bayethe Lodge with its luxury air-conditioned tents. At any one time there will not be more than 110 guests staying in the lodges in total. The Reserve focuses around the Bushman’s River and has five different habitats as well as a wilderness area. It is home to the ‘Big Five’, and has a very strong conservation ethic which aims to protect a vanishing way of life. Shamwari’s highly trained and knowledgeable game rangers accompany guests on morning and evening drives, and will brief their guests on current research and conservation projects, and to ensure continuity, each guest keeps the same ranger throughout their stay.
