Villa Alkhozama

Sleeps up to 4

The appeal of Morocco as a holiday destination has a lot to do with the fact that so much exotic beauty, such a warm year-round climate, such a colourful culture, is only a three hour flight away from the UK. As a country if offers infinite variety, sometimes bordering on the extreme, and nowhere else is this better understood than by visiting Marrakech.

The buildings of the city crowd in upon each other in a fantastic jumble of sights, sounds and scents, but just outside the ancient city is the Palmeraie, a district graced by luxurious villas and lush gardens where the trees frame enticing views of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. Amongst these very desirable villas is the recently completed Villa Khozama, unique in the way that it offers an exceptionally high standard of luxury to just two or four guests. The house bears the distinctive stamp of its designer, leading Moroccan architect Karim el Achak, renowned for his imaginative way with traditional craftsmanship and contemporary trends. In addition, much of the furniture and lighting in the villa is custom designed and brings its own exclusivity.

The house is built around an unusual concept, descending from the ground floor to a lower level where two double bedrooms open on to a large and rather unusual swimming pool, cocooned in a fantastic courtyard where the cinnamon pink walls shelter a hugely glamorous double daybed and sun loungers. The air-conditioned bedrooms are en suite, the bathrooms finished with the intricate local ‘tadelakt’ plasterwork, one of them having its own plunge pool. All the rooms are contemporary in feel, but apart from the typical Moroccan rough stone walls they are also dramatized by traditional features such as the enormous ceiling lamp in the dining room, found in a local souk and now framed by a domed ceiling specially made to display it.

The garden is beautiful, filled with plants that flourish in this climate, scattered with those lovely Moroccan lanterns, and it forms a lush background to the entirely ‘Arabian Nights’ outdoor sitting and dining pavilion – draped and cushioned in spice coloured fabrics.

All meals and soft drinks are included, and the house has a full-time cook and cleaning staff. Meals and drinks can be served on request, and beauty treatments can also be arranged.

The souks and Medina of Marrakech are 15 minutes away and guides can be booked if required. Day trips to the Atlas Mountains, 40 kilometres away, can also be arranged. Local activities include horse and camel-riding, go-karting and golf.

Destination introduction

The rich history of Marrakech is reflected in its various quarters. the Medina, above which rises the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque, the emblem of the city, corresponds to the old town. Place Jemaa El-Fna, the hub of all activity, is its heart. Within the ramparts are the souks (north of Place Jemaa El-Fna), the kasbah and the mellah (the Jewish quarter). Gueliz in the northwest, is the new town laid out by Marhsal Lyautey under the Protectorate. It is filled with Western style offices and businesses.

Avenue Mohamed V is the district's main thoroughfare. Extending Gueliz in  the southwest is Hivernage, a verdant quarter with many hotels that also dates from the Protectorate. The district is bordered on its western side by the Menara Gardens, and on its eastern side by the walls of the medina.
