Geographical Location: Located in the region known as the Campo de Gibraltar, in an area crossed by the Hozgarganta and Guadiaro rivers, situated below the San Cristobal mountain. 155 Km from Cadiz and 39 Km from Algeciras on the A-369 road. There is a bus service to Cadiz and Algeciras. Jimena is at an altitude of 203m above sea level.

Events and festivals

January 5th - Cabalgata de Los Reyes (Three Holy Kings/Wise Men). Traditional Spanish celebrations.

Late January-early February - Carnival.

February 28th - Andalucia Day. A public holiday for the Andalucia Region.

Semana Santa (Holy Week) - Religious events & processions leading up to Easter weekend.

Mid-May - Feria de Mayo. Takes place in the old cattle market. Includes livestock exhibitions, machine displays and cowboy dressage competitions amongst others.

June - Feria de St Martin Corpus Tesorillo. The fair and festival of St Martin, held in conjunction with the festival of Corpus Christi.

Late June - Feria de San Pablo de Buceite. Held in honour of the patron saints San Pedro & San Pablo.

July - International ethnic music festival.

August - Feria de Agosto. Featuring parades with floats as well as cultural and sporting events held both day and night.

Early September - Flamenco Festival de Estacion de Jimena. Held in honour of Our Lady of the Angels.

History

Monuments: The 13th Century Roman-Arab Castle • The Church of the Santa Misericordia with a beautiful 18th Century cloister • The 15th Century Shrine of the Reina de los Ángeles (2 km from town) • The Laja Alta cave paintings • The Homenaje tower • The Cao - the canal of the Royal Artillery Factory located on the river Hozgarganta (used for the first time in 1780, coinciding with the siege of Gibraltar) • The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Victoria • The old Chapel of Santa Ana - in the 16th Century it became the convent of de Mínimos • The Queen Mora's Bath - a basin located behind Jimena castle

Traditional Cuisine: "Gazpacho majado" (a special style of Gazpacho soup) • "Revuelto de esparragos" - asparagus in scrambled egg • "Chantarella", a type of wild mushroom • The sweet 'Piñonate' is a specialty in Jimena and is of Arabic origins
