Destination Information

A uniquely Spanish village nestled in the verdant hillside with white painted sugar cube houses interlaced with tiny streets to make up this traditional Pueblos Blancos. Enjoy tiny village shops selling local produce hidden around every corner with a scattering of small bars and cafés thrown in for good measure.

Geographical Location: in the Western Costa del Sol region, bordering the Ronda highlands. The village is spread over two hills, at 435m above sea level, and 104km from Málaga

Beaches

From the hill-top town of Casares, travel down to the coast to find the following nearby beaches:

La Galera: Home to the old watchtower know as Torre de la Sal (or Torre de las Buenas Noches - or Galera), a peachful black volcanic sand beach with calm waters (1km long, 30m deep).

Ancha: A continuation of Sabanillas Beach and ends at the Torre de Sal point. A black volcanic sand beach with moderate waves (2.1km long, 70m deep).

Events and festivals

January 5th - Cabalgata de Los Reyes (Three Holy Kings/Wise Men). Traditional Spanish celebrations.

February 28th - Andalucia Day. A public holiday for the Andalucia Region.

Semana Santa (Holy Week) - Religious events & processions leading up to Easter weekend.

Last Saturday of May - Lady of the Rosary pilgrimage. Local women accompany an image of The Lady of the Rosary from the Church of San Sebastian to the Hermitage Guadiaro where floral tributes are made. During the afternoon & evening the image is visited by thousands of pilgrims. A midnight Mass followed by a party also takes place.

Mid July - Medieval Market. An annual event that takes place within the walls of the castle. The event recreates a medieval market which includes cultural music concerts, food made with traditional techniques, a medieval tavern, storytellers & demonstrations of old crafts.

Early August - The main fair (Feria) of Casares takes place during the first weekend in August. The 4 day event hosts concerts, alternative music, flamenco, traditional dancing and the famous Fiesta de la Espuma, or Foam Party, are just some of the activities at this yearly event. This village fair also includes competitions and recitals which get the whole village and tourists involved. The feria is a celebration of the resistance of the village against the French between 1810 and 1813.

Early September - The feast of Our Lady of Rosario del Campo (the patron of the village) is held on the first Saturday in September and celebrates the Nativity of the Virgin.

Mid September - Santo Cristo Fair. A 4 day celebration in honour of the end of the summer harvest.
