Destination Information

Set within the ‘golden triangle’ within the Algarve, Almancil is close to fabulous beaches, the Ria Formosa National Park, and the golf and water sport facilities this area is rightly famous for. The town boasts a choice of restaurants serving local specialties and international cuisine and is an excellent base from which to explore the region. Located just to the east, in the nearby village of São Lourenço you will find a church that is an excellent example of Algarvian architecture and covered inside with beautiful 18th century ceramic tiles. The São Lourenço Cultural Centre is in the street leading up to the church, and here you will find regular classical music events and art exhibitions.

Praia da Quinta do Lago (Blue Flag)

Within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, the sandy beach is over 3.5km long, separated from urban areas/resorts by an estuary which is accessed via a wooden walkway approx 320m long.

Praia de Vale de Lobo (Blue Flag)

Facilities: Sunshade rental, Showers, Bodyboard, Windsurfing, Sailing, Small craft hire, Bar, Restaurant, Accessible beach

Flanked by red cliffs (on which is perched the famous Golf course), Vale de Lobo beach is located next to the resort of Vale do Lobo. The large sandy beach stretches for many miles and merges into the neighbouring beaches. Nearby you will find a host of facilities and amenties including a fantastic array of sporting activities (of notice are the water sports, Golf and Tennis) is a well maintained enviroment amidst a pine forest and gardens.

Good Friday - The statues of the Virgin Mary and Christ are taken in a procession through the town

May 1st - May Day (or Labour Day), National holiday - May Day is a day for celebrations and traditionally the festivities include dancing and music as well as heading into the countryside for a picnic lunch

June 10th - Portugal Day, National holiday

June - Cataplana Festival - A celebration of the famous Portuguese dish and cooking style

August 15th - Assumption of the Virgin, National holiday

October 5th - Republic Day, National holiday

November 1st - All Saints Day, National holiday

December 1st - Independence Day, National holiday

December 8th - Immaculate Conception, National holiday

Almancil market:

• Market twice a month near the school in Almancil on the 1st and 4th Sunday of every month

Loule market:

• Weekly market on the street called 'Rua da Nossa Senhora da Piedade' every Saturday
