The Rou Estate – as featured in Condé Nast Traveller and many other prestigious magazines – is a two-hundred year old stone village set high up on a sheltered hillside in north-east Corfu; about twenty minutes drive from the sea, with stunning views over the Corfu Channel and the Albanian coast. A remarkable project to restore the village and turn it into a place of refuge from the stress of modern life has been brought to fruition by Claire, a holistic therapist, and her husband Dominic Skinner, an architect.
Ten of the original houses, and a further three completed in 2009, connected by numerous paths and steps, have been beautifully restored after many years of neglect, together with their central feature, the village square, lined with plumbago and agapanthus. The charm of an old village is in its calm and timeless atmosphere and haphazard growth – something that can still be seen at Rou and gives it so much of its character. Each of the split-level houses has outside terraces, courtyards and a private pool, either plunge or full-size. Interesting old features have of course been retained, but decoration and furnishing is elegant and modern and reflects the taste of each individual owner. The central swimming pool, for the use of all guests, must be one of the most imaginative and beautiful pools in Greece, overlooking a view to take the breath away. Beneath it lie a sauna, steam facilities, changing room and the Asian Spa Ayurvedic Treatment rooms. The Granary, houses further Asian Spa treatment rooms, including changing room with indoor and outdoor shower, and outdoor terraces where guests may relax under the olive trees, in the clean mountain air after a treatment. Therapists can be booked in advance either in one of the treatment rooms or within the privacy of your own house, and offer many forms of holistic healing through options of body and beauty care including an extensive variety of massages, facials, wraps and private classes in Yoga and Tai Chi. The ‘Garden Room’ with its all-encompassing views is a perfect location for special interest holiday groups, for discussions, lessons and lectures. A further secluded terrace with superb views is home to a hot tub, for the use of all guests. A separate air conditioned gym equipped with cross trainer, power plate, exercise bike, treadmill and rowing machine completes the range of facilities. The beautiful gardens, complete with original features and sitting areas, have been designed by Jennifer Gay, a member of the Mediterranean Garden Society. On the practical side, bread will be available daily, and food deliveries can be ordered by phone, while catering can be arranged on request through CV Travel. The Rou Estate is unique in Corfu. Invisible from below, secluded, remote yet not inaccessible, it has the reassuring neighbourliness of a tiny village where all the inhabitants are there for the same reason – to escape for a while to a less demanding world.
