Besides being incredibly beautiful, Devon's landscape offers an astonishing encapsulation of Earth's history. The geological formations of the Jurassic Coast, England's first natural World Heritage Site, travel back over 250 million years, and the famously haunting scenery of Dartmoor shows relics of mysterious stone circles. Today's farmers tread in the steps of Bronze Age man, medieval monks and tinners.
Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh are just some of the famous mariners who came from Devon, and the sea still plays a hugely influencial part in peoples lives here. The Romans left their mark on Exeter where substantial sections of their city walls can still be seen. One of the more notable events in history here was the arrival of William of Orange at Brixham to launch the revolution in 1688.
With its unique character and rolling hills, Devon never fails to capture its visitors, not to mention the famous Devonshire cream teas.
