Oman, still largely undiscovered by the travelling public, remains the great secret of Arabia. At one time a nation of maritime traders, thanks to its strategic situation between India and Europe, the country later endured 250 years of oppressive rule by the same family.
In 1970, however, the present ruler, Sultan Qaboos, set about the task of transforming his country from a primitive land to one of the most modern, yet retaining its finest traditions. Amongst the ancient cities of Oman, Muscat, the capital, stands out, sprawled as it is between the mountains and the Arabian Gulf. Its stunning beauty owes much to dazzlingly white buildings that retain a strictly traditional appearance. It is in the cities that the ancient souks are to be found, subtly different to those of, say, North Africa, with cattle-sellers and storytellers competing for attention with bargains in gold, silver and turquoise jewellery.
