This unusual ‘hotel’ was created from a late 19th century Jordanian village, ten minutes’ drive from Petra. The existing houses and structures have been carefully preserved and transformed into comfortable accommodation with authentic atmosphere. It is possible to observe many aspects of the old way of life, still being practised in Taybet Zaman, while other parts of the village have been subtly adapted to meet contemporary expectations- the Diwan Bar and garden terrace is an example, a wonderful spot from which to watch the sun setting over Petra. Other attractions include a souk and spice shop, handicraft market and Arab bakery, while entertainment comes in the form of local musicians, street pedlars, folklore dances and an excellent disco. The Bedouin-style rooms are comfortable and attractively furnished in traditional style, but have a full complement of contemporary facilities including air-conditioning and private bathrooms. The restored village is owned and run by local people, thus preserving the existence of an ancient community and its heritage, in line with Jordan’s commitment to the environment.
