Dar Shama

Dar Shama

This destination:

Just a short drive from the centre of Marrakech, the great Palmeraie palm grove hides a secret, invisible behind fortress-like walls and massive gates – Dar Shama. Passing through the gates, lush green lawns spread out before you, scattered with inviting sun beds and hammocks. The low villa, more like a private house than a hotel, has been decorated in a traditional style incorporating many of the much-admired Moroccan skills, including that of zellige, the glittering glass mosaic that shimmers so irresistibly in the pure light. A terrace runs along the length of the building, shaded by a colonnade. The comfortable bedrooms continue the traditional theme, with the addition of modern touches such as air-conditioning. The largest suite has a rather splendid Jacuzzi bath, its own lounge, and a terrace on the ground floor.

The hotel can be rented in its entirety, or as two separate buildings, each with its own swimming pool. The main building has ten rooms, one of which is a large suite with sitting rooms, garden and pool. Smaller groups would appreciate the convenience of the Kasbah, a separate building with four exquisitely furnished suites, private sitting room, garden and pool. If the two buildings are rented separately, separate entrances and the exclusive use of each garden and pool assure privacy. With a staff that is friendly but unobtrusive, impeccable service, meals served wherever you like, this is a very refined, truly restful ambience in which to enjoy a stay in Morocco.

Destination introduction

The rich history of Marrakech is reflected in its various quarters. the Medina, above which rises the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque, the emblem of the city, corresponds to the old town. Place Jemaa El-Fna, the hub of all activity, is its heart. Within the ramparts are the souks (north of Place Jemaa El-Fna), the kasbah and the mellah (the Jewish quarter). Gueliz in the northwest, is the new town laid out by Marhsal Lyautey under the Protectorate. It is filled with Western style offices and businesses.

Avenue Mohamed V is the district's main thoroughfare. Extending Gueliz in  the southwest is Hivernage, a verdant quarter with many hotels that also dates from the Protectorate. The district is bordered on its western side by the Menara Gardens, and on its eastern side by the walls of the medina.
